Being part of Ethos Magazine is an incredibly rewarding experience. Yet, it’s also a large time commitment. Please consider that you’ll be expected to come to four general staff meetings per term along with smaller weekly meetings depending on your position. Also be advised all positions listed below are unpaid. If you have any questions, contact us at ethos@ethosmagonline.com.

Development
The Development team has the weighty responsibility of raising enough money through various fundraising events to send Ethos to print. Past events have included the Spirit of Summer Art Competition, Bandest of the Bands, and many other incredible parties and concerts that get our name out to campus and the larger community.
- Advertising Representative: Ad sales are vital to Ethos’ survival. Those working on the ad team use the media kit to contact local business and convince them to invest in our magazine.
- Public Relations Representative: Ethos’ creative public relations team has hosted a variety of exciting and fun events. PR reps are expected to come up with creative and innovative ideas, not only for fundraising, but also for promoting Ethos throughout Eugene.
Editorial
The editorial side of Ethos writes, edits, shoots, illustrates, and designs the magazine for both print and online:
- Associate Editor: As an AE, you’ll guide the writer’s process as they find interview subjects, research, and craft their drafts. You’ll also need to set up weekly meetings with your story group (including writer, photographer, designer, etc.) to monitor all stages of the story before it goes to print.
- Writer: After receiving your story assignment(s), you’ll seek out interviews and send story drafts to your AE every week. Communication and persistence are key to creating a well-rounded story by the assigned deadlines. Writers for the print publication are also encouraged to write for the website.
- Copy Editor: Before text gets placed on the page or on the website, it’s your responsibility to read through your assigned stories and make sure no grammatical or factual errors slip through. Copy editors rotate weeks for editing web content and are assigned specific stories to edit for the print magazine.
- Photographer: You’ll meet with your assigned story group(s) to develop a strong visual representation of the story. Expect to shoot at least twice per assigned print magazine story. You will also be able to work on stories publishing exclusively online.
- Designer: It’s the goal of the designer to develop all text, illustrations, and photos into cohesive and innovative spreads for the print magazine. You don’t need to already be an expert in InDesign and Photoshop, but these will be your two main tools so be open to learning.
- Illustrator: You’ll create visuals to accompany stories instead of, or along with, photos. Your work can also be featured online in such venues as Frog’s Joke of the Week.
- Videographers: Your work will publish on our website. It will be your job to film interviews, events, and other needed components to both accompany print stories when they appear online and to stand alone as Ethos Online exclusives.
Web Team
The more time you want to put in, the more you will get out of Ethos Online. The online team holds weekly meetings separate from the print staff; members are not expected to attend both. As a part of Ethos Online you will work with a story group to develop at least two stories during the term. All positions are needed including writers, videographers, and photographers.
Ethos Online is currently also looking for web designers. Experience with HTML/CSS and/or web design is highly encouraged. Any specific knowledge of WordPress is also beneficial. Web designers will work with the Web Editor to improve the overall site as well as field day-to-day usability issues.
Freelance
Ethos offers freelance opportunities. If you want to begin receiving our weekly e-mail listing all freelance stories and/or you have work you’d like to see publish online, send an e-mail including your name, contact information, past experience, and, if applicable, story idea to ethos@ethosmagonline.com.
